6 Positive Affirmations to Help Build Confidence in a Doubtful Singer
At Superchoir, we’ve been running community choirs for a decade, with our online choir rehearsals taking place for just over a year. We love seeing our members grow in vocal confidence as a result of singing with us.
There is often an assumption that singing in a choir should be reserved only for the professional and technically skilled. When you hear the word choir, thoughts of concert halls, sheet music and orchestra pits can readily come to mind. In reality, there is a vast spectrum of choirs accommodating a whole variety of singers, genres and learning styles.
Over the past few years, community choirs have continued to rise, becoming the go-to outlet for those who love to sing on an enthusiast level.
At Superchoir, we’ve been running community choirs for a decade, with our online choir rehearsals taking place for just over a year. We love seeing our members grow in vocal confidence as a result of singing with us. The happiness and joy our community choir brings is really quite wonderful to witness.
We believe everybody should be given the opportunity to sing – regardless of vocal ability or experience – but negative conditioning has taught society that choirs are off-limits to people who don’t consider themselves good at singing – even though it would bring them so much joy!
The truth is, singing is good for you regardless of how you sound – or how you think you sound.
Singing in an online choir is a great mood lifter; you can improve your sense of happiness and wellbeing by joining a virtual singing group, and it can offer you a real sense of belonging (our Superchoir members are the friendliest bunch!). These wonderful attributes of an online choir have nothing to do with singing ability, only your willingness to get involved and take part.
If you’re someone who would love to join an online choir but has an inner voice of self- doubt, try swapping your negative thoughts with positive affirmations. This requires a conscious effort! The more you practice, the better at it you’ll get.
When we flip negative language on its head, we start to positively recondition our thoughts, turning perceived daunting experiences into empowering ones. It might result in you joining that community choir you’ve always wanted to try out.
Here are 6 positive affirmation examples below:
Negative Thought: Positive Affirmation:
My voice isn’t good enough. | My voice is completely unique and I’m proud of that. I don’t need to be the best singer to have permission to sing! |
I’m not confident enough for people to hear my voice. | Everybody stays muted during online choir rehearsals and I can take virtual performances at my own pace. My confidence will grow in time and I’m excited about that. |
I don’t know anything about singing in an online choir. | I’ll learn all there is to know about singing in an online choir and will be supported by my choir leader and peers. |
I can’t read sheet music so I can’t join a choir. | Superchoir Online teaches all harmonies ‘by-ear’ so no score reading is necessary. Everybody else in the choir is learning the same way as me. |
I’ve never sung before so I can’t sing now. | It’s never too late to join a choir. I deserve a bit of me-time in life, and singing is a great way to improve my happiness and wellbeing. |
The tech-side of joining an online choir will be too difficult for me. | I’m excited to explore this new experience and only require one device and internet connection to take part. Everyone starts off in the same boat, and the process will be straightforward and rewarding. |
There you have it; six positive affirmations to bust away negative thoughts! What doubt- driven statements do you have about your voice that can be flipped with a positive affirmation? We’d love to know!
